In the harsh winter, with cold westerly winds blowing and the sun veiled by clouds, one naturally seeks shelter in the comfort of their home. Yet, in Patna, a feudal mindset continues to plague those living on the margins, placing them in incredibly tough and distressing situations.
It’s hard to believe that even today, in this modern era, so-called ministers and bureaucrats can remain so callous and indifferent. When people are already grappling with such hardships, why must they constantly live under the shadow of fear and uncertainty?
On December 19, troubling news emerged from Amarnath slum, near the Income Tax office. The residents there were facing forced eviction right in the middle of winter. Hearing the heart-wrenching stories from the community deeply moved us. Some of the elderly broke down in tears, asking us haunting questions: "We were born on this earth, so where are we supposed to go?" In moments like these, we feel utterly helpless and powerless. Still, to show our support, we decided to stand with them on Sunday morning.

The meeting we held was encouraging, with many young people in attendance. We spoke to them about the strength that comes from unity and how, together, they can resist external pressures.
We drafted a letter to the Minister, urging him to refrain from using force to evict the community at this time, especially since their children are in the midst of school exams. We also highlighted the broader consequences of eviction. The residents’ essential documents and identity cards—all critical for their survival—bear the addresses of the homes they’ve occupied for over two decades. Uprooting them means erasing their history and stripping them of entitlements tied to their current address. Sadly, this reality seems lost on the officials.
For now, this effort has borne fruit—the eviction has been paused, offering the community a temporary reprieve from these hardships. We hope and pray that one day, a glimmer of hope will shine through, paving the way for a more compassionate and humane society.
